John's Intro:

The count down to Episode 500 is here only 3 more episodes to go. Just a reminder we are now in the 45th week of 2 weeks to flatten the curve from the Rona. The greatest Scam perpetrated on the entire world at once. We are now in the new Biden Era, The entertainment is never ending now, just look at what the plebs are doing to the stock market now to see that..

With great appreciation for the No Agenda Show for their inspiration of ideas and the occasional stolen sound clip.

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

Ambers Rant:

This is #4 of 52 episodes for 2021. Its Episode 496, and I'm kind of feeling a bit like a person stuck in a runaway carriage with the way that this year is going so far! Things are happening so fast, I think I've only blinked a couple of times so far, and everything has changed a million times already!

Luckily though, I'm not actually in a runaway carriage – instead, I'm hanging out in my own zone out area; I recommend you get one: They can be anywhere – a blanket thrown over your couch to build a fort, in your bed with your door closed and a ‘Do Not Disturb' sign or a sock on your door, or even your car! Get into a space all your own, throw on some music and grab a book, or even throw on an audio book and grab a drink! Kick back, and breathe. Try to get there at least once a week, more if you can.

If you have kids, let them know that they should only bother you if they are broken, dying, or bleeding for 1 WHOLE hour. Make your area comfy for you, and try to remove all internet AND radio with news hours while zoning out. Try to let go of everything outside of your control, and work on pestering those you know and care about to get their own Zone Out Space's started.

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is a fast growing fork of WordPress that is starting to come into its own. ClassicPress is focused on Business Websites, runs fast and is looking pretty good. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future.

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. Currently there are not a lot of ClassicPress specific plugins but I do know it is going to grow and I'll have to expand this segment then. Who knows, it could take over the whole show.

This week for ClassicPress I have:

Description

Idea Push! Not really to push Idea's out there, but to get Idea's pushed TO you.
This plugin is designed to get votes from your readers/listeners, get their input, their ideas, and their feedback on whatever you are wanting input and feedback on.

Once you activate this, the first step will be to go to ‘idea push's' settings on the left hand side of your main dashboard, and set it up the way you are wanting. Then you save it, and copy the shortcode. Then you go into your pages, create a new page, enter the shortcode, and viola! You have your idea push page set up!

There is A LOT to this plugin for just the free version, so I recommend you go and check this out! I used the help video to get me through every option in there, and it was really helpful!

This is a really nifty plugin, great way to get idea's or have your current idea's built upon.

There is an upgrade where you can have multiple boards on your site, as well as a few other things that will be unlocked for you, though just the free version with one board will work great to start. Get the brain juices flowing!

The Lowdown:

Well, this had looked like an interesting new plugin for duplication of posts that I discovered while working on a new client project. It seems however by the new reviews in the past couple weeks that this is a plugin to avoid. I do kinda like most products from Yoast but as anyone who has been listening for a while knows, I have been migrating away from the the YOAST SEO to rank math for various reasons. It seems they are loosing touch with the average user of this plugin.

Here are a couple review of this plugin from others.

January 28, 2021
Annoying advertising does not sell, especially when there is no way to remove it. Shows up on every page of wp-admin each time I log in. Only way to be rid is to be rid of plugin itself.

January 27, 2021
Since it has been acquired by Yoast, the plugin has been filled with Yoast advertising that is annoying and unnecessary. I stopped using other Yoast plugins for the same reason. Also, since the last update, it throws some messages in the backend notifying “error during content cloning”, but it has actually cloned perfectly. Most of my clients have called me with questions about this error and concerned that it was a critical error. These are the two main reasons why I have switched to another plugin.

Description

This freebie of a plugin is so much fun.

Once activated, it creates a widget for those using something like Elementor, and in original WP you just click on the ‘Bacon Ipsum' button next to the Add Media button.

Once it's in there, you choose which version you want, 1, 2, or 3, and that's it! You can also title it, though it works without a title. And after this, you are able to generate a Bacon Mockup of whatever page or post you have added this to!

It's a much more fun way to use dummy post words, and very easy to use.

There are over a dozen ways you can style this as well, so that the mockup will be more personalized when you click on it through using shortcode.

Honestly, I got carried away and played around with this for a while, just because it's so fun!

I highly recommend you go and check this out. Loads of fun!

Description

If you are big into tweeting, this is a great little freebie!

This plugin imports all of your tweets, refreshing every 15 minutes. It only pulls your tweets, not the entire conversations, and it is keeping up with the new 260 character setting!

You can personalize it pretty well, and the fact that it also brings in ‘mentions', I can see it being a great marketing tool for those in the know!

I can see how it would be very useful!

It's a little hard to figure out the set up though – or at least for someone such as myself who is unaccustomed to how Twitter works. Perhaps being more familiar with Twitter helps when setting up the OATH Access Token, Consumer Key, etc. I had to look a lot of this up, as there was not really any sort of ‘help' button that I could find within the plugin, and the information on the WP site was just the gist of what this plugin does.

If you do a lot of tweeting, and don't mind a bit of a learning curve to set this up, then I recommend you go and check this out!

Questions and Answers –

*** Note if you have questions you would like asked, send them to Amber at WPPro.ca she will get them into this segment. ****

What is it that causes plugins to clash and not work? For instance, you have one working plugin, you upload another, and then suddenly neither work.

Why is it not a good idea to change up the position of pictures and texts on a site you are building through the padding and what not, in the settings? What does that do to the page or posts ability to transfer between pc, tablet and mobile?

When you have a plugin that brings forward content from other sources like FB, Twitter or YouTube, do they store it somewhere separate? Or are they just pulling it forward? If you were to suddenly be blocked and removed from one of those platforms, would you then lose everything you had brought forward through the plugin? Lose all your content?

    Enrico Battocchi says:

    Hi John,
my congratulations for the show! I’m the original creator of Duplicate Post and now one of its developers at Yoast.

I’m glad that you like the new cool feature that we added, but I’m sorry you chose to highlight two reviews that state wrong facts (one of the reviers has also later acknowledged that) without any mention of our answers.

Let’s put aside the complain for a bug which unfortunately hasn’t been reported as such in the proper way (other people experienced a bug with 4.1 and with their help we were able to patch it in a few hours) and let’s focus to the infamous upgrade notice.

So please let me state that:
    – the notice is displayed to admins only, so regular users are not affected.
    – it used to be displayed on every admin page at every new version: now, as you already know since you used the plugin, it’s displayed only in the Dashboard and the Plugins page and only for major updates. This means that a user upgrading through the last versions (the Yoast ones) it would have been shown just 3 times on two pages instead of the 7 times everywhere as it happened before. I think it’s an improvement.
    – it used to be a *nag* asking for donations when it was my pet project while I was a freelancer, while now it’s just there to let people know about the *huge* improvements and remind that they can sign up to the free Yoast newsletter to stay updated. This hardly qualifies as an ad in my view, while some users go so far that even the new logo, which legitimately shows the Yoast brand, is seen as advertisement. I suppose they are researching for an ad-block plugin for their glasses so while they walk on the streets they don’t see such ads as the Lacoste crocodile on other people’s shirt, or the Toyota logo on cars…
    – we know that the notice is not the best choice, that’s why we are phasing it out. But we can’t do it without replacing it with another way to make sure people can find their way along the big changes that the plugin has been having since it has joined Yoast. So while some people may legitimately find the notice annoying (but not to the extent of saying that it got worse while actually it has hugely reduced its impact, and let me say that someone just overreacts to the Yoast name), there are much more people among the millions using the plugin that use that notice to avoid the need of seeking help from support.
I originally introduced the notice because I was flooded by emails from users who weren’t even aware that the Settings page was there. The upgrade notice, while at the time was really naggy and shamefully begging for money, empowered those users to solve their problems just by providing a source of information, whether it was just a reminder to check the current settings or a link to a guide. Now it’s displayed a fraction of the times it used to, it doesn’t ask for money at all, but at the moment has the unavoidable purpose to help people discover how a completely new feature works.

I’m sorry for the long message but I think that letting just two reviews with some untrue statements speak about the plugin is not right not just for me (I’m getting used to it, while it’s still saddening) but for all the people who are working on making it a better piece of software than it was.

    My best regards,
    keep up the good work!

      Ahkonsu says:

      Hi Enriko,
Thanks for the comment to be fair I will address this in the next show with more in-depth look into the plugin.
