Amber's Rant:

This is #46 of 52 episodes for 2021, and we have reached that time of year of baking and cooking…

I tried making German Dumplings last night: wound up mainly creating sea salt soupy stew…. I managed to find the right level of boiling water for the mashed potato ball dumpling things eventually, but only for the last 5 I made. The recipe was certainly interesting…

I highly recommend trying out random, odd-to-you recipes this winter! You might find out you really like something like German Dumplings (or duck liver, or whatever you find to try out) while simultaneously blocking out time to spend on yourself or with family! Nothing brings you together like kitchen flour fights!! Plus, you heat the house up REALLY well, and it smells pretty good.

Remember to turn off that social media stuff while doing something like cooking or baking! Give the brainmeats a rest from all that noise, and give yourself the ability to truly enjoy the company!

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

News this week:

Patchstack Weekly Update released this very morning before the show: – Be sure to update these three plugins if you are using them as the patch has been added, and the most recent update will keep you more secure.

WordPress Vulnerability Report from ithemes Part 1 for December: – Took me a while to find out where this information was on the webs, but I have found it and I will do my best to bring it to your attention every month! Most of these have been patched, just be sure to update your plugins – though Floating Social Media Icon has not been patched as of October 27th. Uninstall and delete is the advice.

Multiple Security Vulnerabilities Fixed In Hide my WP by wpWave – Hide My WP plugin (versions 6.2.3 and below) recently discovered and patched a vulnerability that was allowing unauthenticated SQL injection and unauthenticated users to retrieve a token to deactivate the plugin. If you use this plugin, be sure to update it soon.

WordPress 5.9 Beta 1 has been released with Detailed Testing Guide – For those of you who enjoy testing these kind of things out, it's out and ready to be tested! You can go and check it out by clicking on the link.

Annual Survey for WordPress 2021 – Only one month left! If you want to get your feedback into the system, be sure to go and check this out!

Gutenberg 12.0 focuses on Cleanup and Minor Enhancements – Meaning that there has been an overhaul of block styles previews, grouped paragraph typography options, and block icons in the global styles sidebar. Most work is being pushed toward the upcoming WordPress 5.9 release, and that isn't happening until January 25 – so Gutenberg has fewer whistles and bells, and more bug fixes.

Using Page Builder vs Waiting for Block Themes – This article is a great take on which option to go for from the point of view of the WordPress Tavern Bartender.

The extras – for even more extra news, check out our Facebook, or Twitter page!

This is the extra news stuff that someone out there might find interesting. To read more, you can head on over to the show notes or newsletter and check it out! If you find something to add for next show, send me a link at amber@wppro.ca

Researchers built an AI that automatically generates movie trailers – Cool! The trailers aren't that great yet – but I'm sure, just give it time, and the thing will be making movie trailers better than us!

Hacker hacks his own company then turns whistleblower to cover his tracks – Entertaining yet disturbing story for you! Definitely gives you something to think about…

Researchers wanted to test cloud security and what they found shocked them – Generally when a bunch of honeypot sites are made to test out cyber security, the time it takes to become compromised is measured in days or months. This time around, it was measured in minutes and hours – every site was compromised within the first 24 hours. Read on to find out more!

More than 300,000 Android users were infected with banking trojans after installing apps from the official Google Play Store – This happened over the past few months, mobile security firm ThreatFabric. The Trojans were delivered through QR code scanners, PDF scanners, security tools, fitness apps, and two-factor authenticators. Check out the link to find out more!

Nasty Windows 10 vulnerability gets a patch – but not from Microsoft…? – This bug can take the form of local privilege vulnerability as well. It was found by security researched Abdelhamid Naceri, and Mitja Kolsek a co-founder of the 0patch micropatching service created a micropatch for the bug. Read on to find out where to get it!

Windows sent out an update for Windows 10 and 11 – Only a few people with 10 have received the prompt so far, though apparently the update will help you work more smoothly specifically on a laptop.

2021, and some has finally written a new Windows 3.x mouse driver. – 'cause rapid and reliable rodent operations are required for this day and age of course! Read on to find out the specifics of our new rodent friends!

Huawei temporarily removed 190 Android games from its AppGallery – They did this because they received a report from Russian Security Firm Dr.Web that the apps contained an overly aggressive monetization library that was collecting extensive details from users' devices. Read on to find out more!

Chip flaws left ‘a third of world smartphones and IOT devices vulnerable to eavesdropping' – Chip manufactured by Taiwanese tech giant MedaTek left smartphones and Internet of things devices open to remote snooping of phone calls and spying via the device microphone according to researchers at Israeli cybersecurity company Check Point. Read on to find out how your device may be flawed!

DuckDuckGo gets a callout for being the Go-To browser for Security's Sake – Third party app trackers have become a real problem, and DuckDuckGo is actually doing something about it! Check out the article to find out more!

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is growing really well, but I just don't have the time to add reviews on ClassicPress myself. I am always open to reviews sent in by listeners; though unless there is a review sent into me on ClassicPress, I am not going to do more than mention that ClassicPress is a thing, and here are some resources. I hope some listeners out there find this information useful!

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future, I just have not time to help them in getting it out there.

ClassicPress News:

No updates for ClassicPress this week!

The Lowdown:

This is a plugin that was found due to a mistake on my part in the title of a plugin I was researching week before last – and I wanted to bring this to peoples attention:

When this plugin was started, it was great and did exactly what it said it did. Unfortunately over the past year or so, it seems to have deteriorated, and now has a tendency to lock people out of their FaceBook whenever they use it and link up to their FaceBook.

This plugin seems to have something wrong with the coding, or maybe there was an update with FaceBook that is clashing with their plugin – I'm not sure. I tried reaching out to them, and my message ‘failed to send' – I got this when I tried:

‘Failed to send your message. Please try later or contact the administrator by another method.'

I did try later, still didn't work – seems to me that they not only have seeming coding issues, but poor customer service as well.

Seems a lot of people have tried reaching out through support on the WordPress site as well, and nothing seems to be being done about it.

Be aware of Social Auto Poster.

The Lowdown:

This is a great plugin if you're running a WooCommerce site and you would like a way to reward your users, and/or you also want to promote the site some more. This plugin will help with that by allowing you to create gift-cards that you can hand out or even sell. Premium version offers even more.

The Lowdown:

Easy Peasy, does exactly what the title says plugin – you activate it, and your site no longer gives you that sometimes rather irritating little link bar when you hover over any link.

Totally free, and seems to play nice with pretty well any other plugin. Great way to tidy up your site!

Check them out, Hide titles on hover!

Reveal IDs

https://wordpress.org/plugins/reveal-ids-for-wp-admin-25/

(5 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

This is something that was part of WordPress admin post area. They removed this from display in 2.5, and if you're a developer there are many times when you need to see those IDs; while you can find them, it is much easier when they are simply displayed for you.

Amber's Plugin

Remove Broken Images

https://wordpress.org/plugins/remove-broken-images/

Version:1.5.0-beta-1
Requires:4.9 or higher
Compatible up to:6.7.1
Released:22 November 2021
Downloads:9710
Last Updated:04 October 2024
Ratings:

(5 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

This is a really useful plugin designed for those larger sites that have old images that may be broken now. By plugging this in, all of your broken links will be ‘removed' – though nothing will actually be altered in your content or database.

How this works is it removes the image tags from the inital HTML output of the page, so it doesn't stop 404 errors – and it doesn't benefit SEO or PageSpeed scores.

What it is doing is preventing the ‘broken image' icon from appearing in your pages, and removes the blank space some browsers allocate for images as they are loading.

This is a newer plugin, and they are working hard to come out with a version 2 that will have an admin tool to let you see which posts and pages contain the broken images – sounds really useful!

Totally free, and is very useful! Especially when in order to find said broken images in a larger site, it would take hours of scouring, whereas this just gets plugged in, and does its job! Nothing else needed.

Worth grabbing up if its something you could use, Remove Broken Images.
