With great appreciation for the No Agenda Show for their inspiration of ideas and the occasional stolen sound clip.

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Ambers' Rant:

This is #38 of 52 episodes for 2021! The weather is cooler, and I already find myself in the kitchen waaayyyyy more! Partially to help heat the house, but also because it's just that time of year. There is a pumpkin recipe I saw years ago that I still want to try – you make a soup inside of a pumpkin by putting everything into the hollowed out pumpkin, then baking the pumpkin. I don't remember everything you do, but that was the gist of it – maybe I will actually get around to it this year!

I personally think that everyone should try to get into the kitchen at least once a week about this time of year, drag the kids in, and go nuts with your ingredients! Make goodies and try new recipes out! When you get going in the kitchen, and the kids are there, it always leads to some amazing conversations. Even better, make sure there is no music or anything, and start singing fun songs, (however horribly!), with the kids while cooking! Cooking and baking together can lead to some amazing times of fun and enjoyment.

If baking and cooking is just not your thing, see if you can teach your kids how to do cats cradle. We all knew it as kids ourselves, I'll bet that there are not many kids who know how to do that these days! Find the time to sit and chat and just enjoy each others company – whether it's kids or friends or family in general. It feels pretty awesome, and really helps with the whole emotional and mental health. Those dishes can wait. 😉

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

News this week:

9 Effective Tips to Shut Down Spam in WordPress for Good
https://torquemag.io/2020/07/spam-wordpress/

FB, Instagram, and WhatsApp all went down Monday – The issue lasted for about 6 hours; the fact that these large companies are going down almost regularly has got me thinking: if you use clouds, be sure and grab all of your information that you need and save it onto a drive! When I see things like this, I think about what exists only online that I need to have physical access to at any time in order to complete my work. These kind of incidents are a great reminder for me, and I recommend they be that for you as well dear listeners.

6 hour outage of FB rekindles push for a free and open web – A call for updates and information to be shared through email and on the web rather than on FB and other social media platforms.

Gutenberg 11.6 improves the global styles UI, adds child theme support – Great news for those who use Gutenberg! The child theme support now has typography options, cropping, and a toolbar button for converting old gallery blocks to the new format. There have also been loads of enhancements and bugs that have been fixed.

Gutenberg bring in new API for locking blocks – Part of the recent update is bringing in a new API for managing lock control at the block-type level. This means that when defining a block, developers can now use the lock attribute to designate whether a block can be moved or removed. I can see this being useful.

Tech Supply getting more complicated – Article talking about the economic blow-back from the lock downs and silicon shortages combined making the retrieval of tech parts even harder to achieve.

BEFORE upgrading to windows 11, read this!! – important information, such as whether or not your computer will even be able to handle the upgrade. Most computers don't actually meet the system requirements. There are also a few other things covered in this article that are important to know.

Memory leak in windows 11's file explorer is holding users' RAM hostage – Windows 11 is having issues with closing up the memory leaks – something to be aware of if you are thinking about upgrading!

The extras – for even more extra news, check out our Facebook, or Twitter page!

This is the extra news stuff that someone out there might find interesting. To read more, you can head on over to the show notes or newsletter and check it out! If you find something to add for next show, send me a link at amber@wppro.ca

Sent in by a listener:
Why you should delete Google Chrome – This article goes through the fact that Google Chrome has been 2.6 billion users at risk of surveillance, manipulation and abuse by allowing sites to see whether or not the person on their site while on mobile is active or not.

Sent in by a listener:
Google confirms Chrome's 12th & 13th Zero-Day Hacks in 2021 – Chrome users beware! The attacks on Chrome have been intensifying all year, and now two more critical hacks have come to pass!

Tips Tuesday with MayAnna!

WayBack machine predicts a grim future with its WayForward machine – It's an interesting concept for sure! Though it is a little grim looking…. I tried Netflix.com, and had a bunch of popups blocking my way in because the information could not be ‘guaranteed'…. Very grim indeed…

WordCamp US 2021 draws more than 3600 attendees – This is very exciting numbers for WordCamp as it was an online gig, and the online gig's are pretty hard to convince people to come to.

Can humour be reduced to an algorithm?? – Really, the answer is yes – though I personally think that mostly what we find funny the AI has no clue about. AI can be programmed to be funny, though it also depends upon the humans to which the robot is showing itself to as to whether or not it is found funny – interesting article going through the attempt at coding in humour.

How to report scam apps in the app store – This is actually very useful, as there are a lot of people who don't realize that this can be done, or that doing so will help in the long run to come across less scam apps.

3 ways to build customer loyalty in 2021 – Customer retention is the biggest challenge for e-commerce brands, especially these days. This goes through the 3 key ways to keep customers; it's a great help, even when you are not new to the game, but need a little extra help.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is growing really well, but I just don't have the time to add reviews on ClassicPress myself. I am always open to reviews sent in by listeners; though unless there is a review sent into me on ClassicPress, I am not going to do more than mention that ClassicPress is a thing, and here are some resources. I hope some listeners out there find this information useful!

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future, I just have not time to help them in getting it out there.

No news for ClassicPress today!

The Lowdown:

This is a useful plugin if you are in need of some quick tabs for content you are displaying on a page. You can create as many tabs as you need with some simple short code and just add your content between the short code. You can adjust the CSS for look and feel and determine which tab to be auto opened and more.

The Lowdown:

Looking for a pop-up maker that has the option for a Google map, I came across this one!

It reminds me of the pop-ups you would get in the 90's – very simple, basic border, typical colour options!! Totally free, and you can put any short code in there to present. This works even for game plugins that you have a shortcode to – though I wasn't able to PLAY the game, it still showed up in the pop up. 😀

You have control over how long it sticks around, whether or not it comes back, where on your site it pops up, if it shows up automatically again or not, what triggers it – there is a lot of control with this! Very easy to use and get going!

The Lowdown:

If you are looking for a pop-up to help gain subscribers, than this is the one! Their free version gives you A LOT of templates, including map ones! Very easy to use, and looks great!

I like the control they give you – how many times it pops up, whether it shows up only for first time users, everyone, or until the user makes an action with a ‘reminder' every however many days you want. VERY useful!

This is really only a pop-up for gaining more subscribers, but the way it has been made is fantastic!

And their pro ratings are reasonable too! Definitely worth looking at if you are in need of a subscription pop-up.

The Lowdown:

If you're like many website owner's, you have multiple domains for your site and I am no exception. This plugin makes it easy to direct those different domains to specific landing pages. Just add those domains to your site and then using this plugin you can direct them to specific pages to land on.

WP Modal Popup with Cookie Integration

(4.5 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

Really basic, only capable of linking to your home page. You can put in whatever you like, though you can't link it to any specific page.

Basic control over the settings, and totally free!

Nothing to sneeze at if this is all you are needing for sure, though not something to grab up if you are needing to link to a particular page, or if you are wanting to add in contact information or anything like that.
