John's Intro:
It's Episode 592 and we have plugins for Fast Indexing, Security and Firewalls, Easy MailChimp, Bible Up, Limit Mailers, Custom Logins… and ClassicPress Options. It's all coming up on WordPress Plugins A-Z!
– ‘good morning, good afternoon, good evening, wherever you happen to be hiding out there on the globe today! Coming to you LIVE from …'
Amber's Rant:
Welcome to Episode 592 – Bringing in the Future of WordPress Plugins – Hoping everyone is keeping healthy and avoiding those nasty colds floating about!
We have a bit of an announcement for everyone, we are going to be moving our show officially to Monday, noon-thirty (12:30pm). Reason is simple – our clients need us on Monday mornings so all other things need be bumped so we can be there for them. Used to be that Mondays were the quiet days – now it almost feels like a super busy Friday!
Onto the art!
Remember: This is a Value for Value show, meaning any value you find here, offer that same value back! We accept all currencies including time and talent currency! Chocolate is always good too…
And don't skip the end of the show – you never know what kind of amazing life altering advice you might catch!
A special note to all of our Listeners out there: What do you think about the way our show flows? Got an idea? Share it with us! Got a question? Don't be shy about asking! If you have a question or an idea that will make this show better, don't hesitate to chuck it at us – if we can't catch it we will just duck.
…When you see this in the notes, this means we didn't read this on the show, and that the only way to find this information out is to read our Show Notes!
…You can send any questions/suggestions or notes saying ‘hi' over to me at amber@wppro.ca, or hit up our site wpppluginsatoz.com/contact – Be creative with the title so that the spammer eater doesn't eat your note though!
Let's start the show with this weeks Featured Artist:
Artist: Artist J. Saliba
We are still lacking in new art, however because of this we get to bring forth some amazing art that has not been seen for a while!
Feeling Inspired? Hit up our site at https://wppluginsatoz.com/artwork/ and submit some artwork of your own!
…We can NEVER have too much art!

Breaking News in the WordPress World at large!!
…If I missed something, shoot me a link at amber@wppro.ca – it may show up on the next show!
News this week:
WordPress Vulnerabilty Report – February 8, 2023 (https://ithemes.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-february-8-2023/) – First of all, for those who are into testing, WordPress Core 6.2 Beta is up and ready for testing!
The list of plugins to be aware of this week is decently long. The ones I most easily recognize are:
User Acivity, Embed PDF, LIst Pages Shortcode, 0mk Shortner – there seems to be an issue with a few different shortcode plugins. Be sure to check out the list yourself as I don't list them all on air here. You can find the link here in the show notes.
WordPress.com is testing AI-Generated Images and Content (https://wptavern.com/wordpress-com-is-testing-ai-generated-images-and-content) – WordPress is currently testing two new blocks for generating paragraph content and images to be generated by AI. The two blocks are labelled as experimental, and are being called ‘JetPack AI – your writing assistant on WordPress.com'. Could be great, could also spell the end of content generators who do this for a living. Who knows? You can read more on this by following the link in our show notes.
Twitter Outage uncovers more details on the upcoming API Access changes, giving fetaverse a shot in the arm (https://wptavern.com/twitter-outage-uncovers-more-details-on-upcoming-api-access-changes-giving-the-fediverse-a-shot-in-the-arm) – Twitter's major outage on February 8th left a lot of Twitter users without the ability to Tweet or send/receive private messages. Some reported receiving messages stating that they were over their daily limit for sending tweets. This has sent a lot of Titter users off to Mastodon, CloudFlare's newly released WildBeest – people are escaping the Twitter and moving onto other platforms for constant use.
Gutenberg 15.1 adds Openverse integration (https://wptavern.com/gutenberg-15-1-adds-openverse-integration) – 15.1 Gutenberg was released this week with Openverse integration in the Media Tab. The Openverse Library of openly licensed and public domain works has also moved to its own website with an updated design. It contains more than 600 million free-to-use images and audio files that are now available inside WordPress's editor. I can see this being directly connected like this very useful in the future – you can follow the link in our show notes to learn more and read up more on this.
WordPress opens applications for 2023 Community Summit (https://wptavern.com/wordpress-opens-applications-for-2023-community-summit) – The WordPress Open Source event will be hosting a community summit as part of the WordCamp US this year. This will take place on August 22-23, 2023, in National Harbor, Washington DC. This is an invitation only event, and will be the first one in six years. The last one was held in France, 2017. The application to attend is no open to all contributors, regardless on how long you have been involved in the project.
WP Community Collective Names Alex Stine as first Accessibility Fellow (https://wptavern.com/wp-community-collective-names-alex-stine-as-first-accessibility-fellow) – The WP Community Collective (WPCC) is a newly formed nonprofit organization dedicated to funding individual WordPress contributors and community-led initiatives, has announced its first Accessibility Fellow. Alex Stine, an individual who is a fully blind contributor, who has been working with WordPress Accessibility team since 2016, is the first recipient of a Fellowship. You can read more on this by following the link in our show notes!
What Greek Myths can teach us about the danger of AI (https://thenextweb.com/news/what-greek-myths-can-teach-about-dangers-of-ai) – There are many stories of intelligent humanoids peppered throughout the Greek Mythologies; we are not the first to think up AI. There are some really cool stories brought up by the writer of this article like The Golden Maidens made by Hephaestus, Talos: Intelligent machines in the hands of tyrants, and a favourite – Pandora. I really like the take on these stories and really, they offer quite a bit of wisdom on the modern day version of AI, some decent insight, and even some wisdom.

WordPress Plugins
————————————————-
John's Plugin
Fast Index
https://wordpress.org/plugins/fast-index/
The Lowdown:
If you have an indexing problem on Google, you have to use this plugin. Working with Google API and fasted every plugin or SEO. When you publish new post, page or etc it will send your URL to Google.
Rating 4 Dragons
————————————————-
Amber's Plugin
BibleUp
https://wordpress.org/plugins/bibleup/
The Lowdown:
I thought this plugin might be useful for anyone with a Bible oriented site. What this plugin does is define any Bible Verse in your posts with a little popup.
You will find the dashboard for this plugin under ‘Settings' -> ‘BibleUp'.
When you place any verse, like 1 Peter 3:15, there will be a popup that shows up over the verse name in your post or page once the plugin is activated. The popup will bring forth the verse quoted.
You have the ability to change the colour of the popup box's background, the text type, text size – and you can make it possible for a Dark Theme to work with it.
If you have a Bible site, or a client who does, this could be very useful indeed!

John's Plugin
All-In-One Security (AIOS) – Security and Firewall
https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-security-and-firewall/
The Lowdown:
All-in-One Security (AIOS) is a security plugin designed especially for WordPress, now brought to you from the team at UpdraftPlus. Customers love All-In-One Security because it’s easy to use, and it does a whole lot for free.
All-In-One Security gives you Login Security Tools, to keep bots at bay and protect your website from brute force attacks.
The Web Application Firewall gives you automatic protection from security threats.

Amber's Plugin
Limit Registration by Mail Domain
https://wordpress.org/plugins/ithabich-limit-registration-by-email-domain/
The Lowdown:
This is a bit of a different take on the registration limitation plugin.
Once installed and activated, you will find the dashboard for the plugin under ‘Settings” -> ‘Registration Limit by Domain Name'.
For this, you need to add the domains allowed. Not great if you have a wide open site available for anyone to join up to, though fantastic if you want the site to only be for the company and everyone has the same email domain.
This plugin only regulates registration for WordPress Core, so other plugins such as 2FA-plugins, BuddyPress, and WooCommerce may cause issues for registration. Be sure to double check that all registrations are working properly after any changes made.
Totally free plugin worth checking out. Could be a very useful plugin for you, recommend trying it out!

We Interrupt the Meat and Potatoes of Plugin Depravity Edition to bring you our Donations Segment and to thank our Producers!
Since we just work here, it's up to you, our Producers, to keep the show's larders stocked with Time, Treasure, or Talent Donations! If you need more information on how to do that, you can check out our site wppluginsatoz.com – right up in the menu you will see the definition for each one under ‘Donations'!
Special thanks goes to:
Free-Lance Producers popping in and out:
Though always showing up at unexpected times, these Producers are surely part of the reason our name is getting out there! Thank you!
…If you have listened to even 10 minutes of this show, or shown up a single time to one of our live shows on YouTube, you are one of our many Free-Lance Producers! Although you guys are always popping in and out at unexpected times, we appreciate your support and periodic help with one thing or another – thank you!
Back Room Producers hanging-out in the Lounge:
Always about the place consuming all the coffee and donuts, these Producers earn it by helping out with our contests, artwork, site organization, notes, questions, suggestions, licenses, and by hiring us! Your Time and Talent Donations are equal to your Treasure Donations of under $50, and we would not be here without you – thank you!
…Back Room Producers, if you ever notice something that needs some work feel free to reach out to us and let us know – you can offer to take it up yourself, or just let us know and we will add it to our list.
War Room Producers:
With their donations of $50 or more these Producers receive a few extra perks – an official AtoZ Handle of their choice, a spotlight in that weeks show for a short speech, an official Executive Producership Credit, and you get to be part of the ‘Magic' as it happens up in the War Room before we send the show out into the netherworld of the internets! Thank you for sticking by us and helping to keep the Back Room Producers stocked in coffee and donuts!
…**If you prefer to stay anonymous, please let us know at the beginning of your note to us regarding your donation! We are more than happy to keep you anonymous from the world – nobody is ever forced out of the tender embrace of the shadows on this show!**
…To receive your Official AtoZ Handle, think up an original name, and send it into us! Be sure to note down the show number and title of the show so that we know when to log it!
…Your spotlight can be an elevator pitch for your business, a note, or you can just skip it!
…The Producership Credit we offer is REAL! When you send your donation in to us of $50 or more, please be sure to note down the number and title of the show your donation shows up on, and we will back up your right to claim Producership!
…'being part of Magic Happen' refers to being part of the show – if you are interested in taking up a larger part in the show, reach out to us and let us know! We will be happy to discuss the options!
…War Room Producers, same as for the Back Room Producers, reach out to us if you notice something that needs work! Whether you are wanting to take up the job yourself or just inform us and leave it, we will add it to our list!
Thank you, now back to the Meat and Potatoes of Plugin Depravity Edition!
John's Plugin
Easy Forms for Mailchimp
https://wordpress.org/plugins/yikes-inc-easy-mailchimp-extender/
The Lowdown:
Easy Forms for Mailchimp allows you to add unlimited Mailchimp sign up forms to your WordPress site. You can add forms to posts, pages, sidebars and other widgetized areas. Your Mailchimp API Key connects your site to your account and pulls in all of your list information. List statistics can be viewed right from your dashboard.

Amber's Plugin
MyWP Custom Login
https://wordpress.org/plugins/mywp-custom-login/
The Lowdown:
This is a great plugin for personalizing your website's login, and only making changes to that. I have found that a lot of the plugins with this feature only have it as an additional feature of something else – or it's an addon of another premium plugin.
You will find the settings for this under ‘Settings' -> ‘MyWP Custom Login'. Here you can change the following:
- Add your Logo and Customize your Title tag
- Change Logo Width and Height
- Define the Login Page Background Color
- Put a Background Image
- Customize completely your Login Form
- Remove links from the WordPress Login Page
- Delete the WordPress Text by default
Another cool feature about this plugin is that if you are using Erident Custom Login Plugin, you can import your settings.
Great free plugin, seems to play well with other too!

ClassicPress
ClassicPress is at a crossroads right now, we aren't sure whether or not they are going to stick around. It seems that either option they choose will have a lot of hard bumps ahead – I hope that they manage to keep ClassicPress going, that they become super strong and amazing like I know they can, and that they manage to keep that part of themselves that caused us to like them so much in the first place.
…A little about ClassicPress for those who aren't sure: ClassicPress is WordPress frozen at version 4.9. Once WordPress moved to 5, they added in a whole lot of new folders, and the experimental additions to the Core started in earnest. ClassicPress is literally the Classic version of WordPress. A few plugins have been made over the years for just ClassicPress, though all Plugins compatible with WordPress 4.9 should work for ClassicPress.
To any ClassicPress user listening right now: I challenge you – yes YOU – to write a review of your favourite, or least favourite ClassicPress plugin, and send it into us! You can do so by hitting us up at https://wppluginsatoz.com/submit-plugin-review/!
…And feel free to add more to this section by reaching out to me at amber@wppro.ca.

I was new not too long ago, and I know how overwhelming it can be stepping into this world at this stage – I know for a fact that questions you have are the same questions others out there have!
Hi Amber,
Thanks again to you and your dad for doing a great weekly show.
Just wanted to get your thoughts on doing updates to wordpress websites. I know never to update to a major version until the dot release comes out, but what about themes and plugins? Do you update them as soon as they come out or do you update them out of weekly basis or some other time basis?
Thanks,
Andrew

Q & A Time with Amber – Catch this info on our YouTube Channel
If you have questions you would like to have asked on the show, send them in to me at Amber@WPPro.ca – let's see if we can stump my dad!
- Say there is a plugin you really like and you can't find a replacement, though the developers no longer support it. How long is it safe to keep using it for?
- Are all free plugins considered open source? Or only the ones that state it?
I have a couple more questions for my dad just after the closing credits, for those listening elsewhere, you will have to make your way over to the YouTube's!
Questions asked after closing credits:
- Is it allowable to start supporting a plugin that is no longer supported yourself? As in give it your own updates so as to keep it functioning?
- When creating a plugin, how much has to be different from the original to pass as an original plugin?
One more time for the ways to contact us!
