With great appreciation for the No Agenda Show for their inspiration of ideas and the occasional stolen sound clip.

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

Ambers' Rant:

This is #22 of 52 episodes for 2021. Its Episode 514, which in numerology equals 1! The meaning for 1 in numerology essentially stands for self sufficiency, new beginnings, lack of fear in learning and exploring to obtain your goals. I personally feel that this is a fantastic number to have for a show at this time of year! What with spring slowly turning into summer, greenery popping up everywhere and the sun heating everything up!

It almost feels like this island is taking a collective breath of relief. Time to start getting back out into the world and experiencing life again! And whether you get back to experiencing life in the great outdoors with a friend or on your own, be sure to turn off the media! No radio, no Internet, just good conversation if you got a friend along, or the music of the world around ya!

If you can't make it outside due to being crazy busy, maybe just open a window and turn off the media for about an hour every day. I'll bet you a beer that it helps!

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

News this week:

Ujwal Thapa, co-founder of WordPress Nepal Community has passed this last week. This is a link that talks a little bit about him for those who were aware of and/or knew him.

Google's Chrome Canary now has a feature flag to allow users to opt out – Chrome Canary is the raw and unfinished browser of the Chrome we know and love, and the fact that there is a feature flag allowing users to opt out is, in my opinion, a positive thing! Perhaps the opt out flag showing up here means that we will see it in the fully completed Chrome sooner than we had hoped!

Heads up for everyone using Windows – unveiling of new Windows is coming on June 24th! They are being a bit hush-hush about what the new version will have in it, but there are rumours that it will have dual screen features in it, as that is something they were focusing on with Windows 10X before they shut that down.

Google voices concerns about Bill C10 in Canada and the effects that it might have on both creators and viewers. (basic break down of Bill C10 in the extras) It seems that Google is mostly worried about their algorithms being negatively impacted, but the concern is valid about the effects that this bill may have on both creators and viewers.

Gutenberg brings in an Image duotone filter for WordPress 5.8! This could be lots of fun for people who use Gutenberg.

Tips Tuesday with MayAnna on BlogAid! Her site is amazingly helpful, and this week's Tips Tuesday has some pretty awesome things that she covers, including (though not limited to) Site speed, Future of Plugins, and FLoC Block.

This is the extra news stuff that someone out there might find interesting. To read more, you can head on over to the show notes or newsletter and check it out! If you find something to add for next show, send me a link at amber@wppro.ca

The extras.

Basic break down of what Bill C10 is about for those of our listeners who reside in Canada.

Online Word Camp scheduled to run from June 7 – June 9.

Back up your entire computer with a USB drive – this is more of an ad than an article, but skipping over the ad bits, I was able to gleam that this USB stick backs up everything to a cloud. If you are already using a cloud to back things up, this could be a great idea for you.

Logo trend report – neat list I came across. This is the trend report for 2021, so if you're looking for idea's, this might be useful.

Beware of the Android FluBot android malware! Cute name, but pretty bad for you if you get this.

Cyber Attacks bring down major meat supplier JBS in the USA. Cyber attacks seem to be focused on USA right now – but I personally believe that we will start seeing them in Canada before too long.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is a fast growing fork of WordPress that is starting to come into its own. ClassicPress is focused on Business Websites, runs fast and is looking pretty good. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future.

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. Currently there are not a lot of ClassicPress specific plugins but I do know it is going to grow and I'll have to expand this segment then. Who knows, it could take over the whole show.

This week for ClassicPress I have:

I look forward to the day they have their own repository. I can still recall WP when it had a small repository.

The Lowdown:

This is a great tool that may help you make more sales on your e-comm site. It let you display a list of recently purchased products from your store where your site visitors and customers will see it and just might encourage them to buy those products also. The bugs are there though in that it only pulls the first product from recent orders and does require some CSS work to get it to display well. It does have some great promise though.

The Lowdown:

This is a totally free Pintrest button for your site!

You can simply take the short code provided and place it in any content you want people to be able to pin, or you can get fancy and set it up so that you can make specific pages, specific or all posts, even taxonomies specifically pinnable by enabling the hover pin option.

If you want to get specific and a bit fancy, it can be a little bit of a pain to set up – but once set up you just leave it alone!

I personally would just use the easy ‘add the code' way.

Great plugin, well maintained.

The Lowdown:

IF you use Woo Commerce, this could be absolutely fantastic for your customers! I know for myself, I love when the sites I buy from have this list pop up. Often times I am buying about 3 things that I can only get one a month of, and being able to go to what I bought last time, then move forward from there, it just makes it so much easier.

Now this is a brand new plugin, so there are bound to be a few bugs to work out still – just a heads up.

You use a short code to have the recently bought list display on the site – you can set it up so that the list shows as a grid, or as a list. You can customize the amount of previously bought items to any number, and although the list is default DES order, you can change it to ASC.

The settings are easy enough to follow and set up.

Due to the fact that I am unable to really try this out long term and therefore can't give anyone a true heads up about possible bugs, I am bringing this down one dragon.

The Lowdown:

This is one I may have covered in the past but though it should be brought back forward again. There will be many times when you need to add code to your header or footer and this plugin make that a breeze. Once installed and activated, it gives you a place to add codde that will be inserted into your header or footer.

The Lowdown:

I think this could be brilliantly useful! A plugin designed to allow you to fill your WordPress install with your preferred settings. This way you can test out thing and don't need to change the settings every time manually!

This plugin was designed more for people who are working on and testing out plugins that require setting changes all the time, rather than it is for production sites.

Setting this up is a wee bit tedious, but once it is set up, you just let it go!

Totally free, and seems to work fairly well! I recommend you go and check this out!

Questions and Answers –

*** Note if you have questions you would like asked, send them to Amber at WPPro.ca she will get them into this segment. ****

-When I first started working with you, I asked what kind of computer I would need. You said to look at gamer computers.

  • Why are gamer computers good for this kind of work?
  • Is there another kind of computer that would work as well, or better than gamer computers?

-How different would it be using and working with WordPress off of an OS like Linux do you think?

-Have you used any other OS's since you started working in this industry?

If so – Was it harder or easier or the same to keep your information secure?

If not – Do you know from second hand information what, if any, the differences are in security for this industry?
