Amber's Rant:

Welcome to Episode 588 – Rolling The Dice with WordPress – WELCOME to the first LIVE show of 2023!! So far, a very interesting and exciting start to the year with the funky weather – is anyone else starting to feel just a little like they will need gills to breathe outside soon? The rain is falling so constantly that my front yard could be rented out as a mud wrestling pit!!

Remember: This is a Value for Value show, meaning any value you find here, offer that same value back! We accept all currencies including time and talent currency! Chocolate is always good too…

And don't skip the end of the show – you never know what kind of amazing life altering advice you might catch!

A special note to all of our Listeners out there: What do you think about the way our show flows? Got an idea? Share it with us! Got a question? Don't be shy about asking! If you have a question or an idea that will make this show better, don't hesitate to chuck it at us – if we can't catch it we will just duck.

…When you see this in the notes, this means we didn't read this on the show, and that the only way to find this information out is to read our Show Notes!

Breaking News in the WordPress World at large!!

…If I missed something, shoot me a link at amber@wppro.ca – it may show up on the next show!

News this week:

WordPress Vulnerability Report – January 4, 2023 (https://ithemes.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-january-4-2023/) – There is a very long list of plugins that have had vulnerabilities fixed recently. Be sure to check that out!

The list we have for plugins with vulnerabilities this week is a good one, though not super long thankfully. The ones I recognize most easily are: WP Limit Login Attempts, Accordion Shortcodes, Social Sharing Toolkit, and EU Cookie law.

We have a lot of WordPress Themes with issues this week listed: Aidreform, Kingclub-theme, Footysquare, Spikes-black, Stratfort, Spikes, Club-theme, Soundblast, and Bolster.

Check out the link in our show notes so that you can see what specifically is going on with these plugins and themes.

ClassicPress at a crossroads, Directors consider re-forking WordPress (https://wptavern.com/classicpress-at-a-crossroads-directors-consider-re-forking-wordpress) – ClassicPress is currently polling its users to try and determine what next step should be taken for the software. The two options in the poll are: ‘re-fork ClassicPress using WordPress 6.0, or continue as is'.

There is an exploratory of WordPress 6.0 with the block editor removed on GitHub called WP-CMS, and could potentially become ClassicPress 2.0. The upside of re-forking like this is that ClassicPress would catch up to WordPress compatibility with PHP, and would open up more plugins and themes for users so that they could have 5.0 compatibility. Downside – it will take many months to accomplish this and would need to be maintained in terms of security for some time – my understanding is that it would need to be maintained rather carefully and watched closely, which would be hard to do with so few people available to do the work.

Regarding the other option doesn't really seem to have any real upsides asides from keeping ClassicPress as Classic as possible – though there seem to be a lot of drawbacks: will take a while to catch up on PHP compatibility, backporting for WordPress is prioritized so new ClassicPress features may not happen, inability to catch up with WordPress features and functions, incompatibility with themes 5.0 and up.

The question driving this poll seems to this: ‘… is ClassicPress a pre-WordPress 5.0 or just WordPress without Gutenberg?'

Linux backdoor Malware targets WordPress sites with outdated, vulnerable Themes and Plugins (https://wptavern.com/linux-backdoor-malware-targets-wordpress-sites-with-outdated-vulnerable-themes-and-plugins) – Researchers at Dr Web have discovered some seriously misbehaving malware from a Linux program; this malware is targeting outdated and vulnerable themes and plugins, and works by injecting JavaScript into said plugins and themes, giving them the ability to resell traffic or arbitrage. There is a worry that this script is giving them a long term ability to to give them administrative access even after users have updated the plugins and themes – creating a long term gain.

There are currently two versions known: Version 1 targets plugins like WP GDPR Compliance, Easysmtp, WP Live Chat and more. Version 2 seems to just be a different list on a different server targeting plugins like FV Flowplayer Video Player, Brizy Page Builder, WooCommerce, and more.

Awesome Motive acquires Duplicator Plugin (https://wptavern.com/awesome-motive-acquires-duplicator-plugin) – While the creators of the plugin are relinquishing control in order to pursue other endeavors, the rest of the team is apparently going to continue working under Awesome Motive – which hopefully means that Duplicator will not change overly much in any sort of negative way. It seems that the creators of this plugin may have sold the plugin with the caveat of them accepting their wish list for the future of the plugin – I really hope it works out and that this plugin so many of us know and love will be able to keep the same core of awesome!

WordPress.com launches Newsletter Project (https://wptavern.com/wordpress-com-launches-newsletter-product) – This appears to be a new product by WordPress for creating, personalizing, and sending out emails from your WordPress site. I'm not entirely sure how well this will work out since there are already sooooo many Newsletter plugins, though this is apparently adjusted to go with Gutenberg, for those who want to have a newsletter site, rather than an additional newsletter for their site to send to their subscribers.

Commercial and Community Categorization is live on WordPress.org Theme and Plugins (https://wptavern.com/commercial-and-community-categorization-is-live-on-wordpress-org-theme-and-plugin-directories) – One of the things mentioned at State of the Word this last year, was an addition of new taxonomies for the theme and plugin directories in order to help users more easily search through them. Both Community and Commercial designations were made live a couple of weeks ago at the writing of this, though it seems the new classifications have not fully caught on. There is apparently a much broader version of these classifications to come, to be added into the site. It should be interesting to see what new classifications are to come, and whether or not they actually help or hinder – it has been my experience that sometimes, too many categories make it much harder to figure out what you are looking for.

Block Protocol Announces New WordPress Plugin Coming in 2023 (https://wptavern.com/block-protocol-announces-new-wordpress-plugin-coming-in-2023) – Block Protocol is a project that was launched earlier in 2022 with the goal of building a universal block system. Sometime soon they will be announcing their new WordPress Plugin that will allow users to embed interactive blocks compatible with Gutenberg. This should be an interesting development, I look forward to checking it out – although I also fear for the long term consequences of having globally accepted blocks through a plugin; what happens every time they patch something and/or update to keep up with one platform, to all the other platforms? How will changing something to work with one platform affect the other platforms?

WordCamp Europe 2023 speaker applications open, organizers call for more interactive sessions (https://wptavern.com/wordcamp-europe-2023-speaker-applications-open-organizers-call-for-more-interactive-sessions) – WordCamp Europe 2023 is being hosted in Athens, with two conference days planned for June 9th and 10th. First day's theme is ‘WordPress Now' – meaning ‘everything that can currently be achieved with WordPress', and second day's theme is ‘WordPress Tomorrow' – no meaning given, but I suppose the idea is to bring forth items and ideas for what might be in the future of what WordPress can do. Organizers are calling for speakers, with an emphasis on 'empower(ing) people to feel more comfortable using WordPress'. They are specifically looking for new voices with fresh perspectives. You can check out our show notes to find the link and sign up if you think this might be something you are interested in joining!

How to live off the grid as a techie (https://thenextweb.com/news/how-to-live-off-the-grid-as-a-techie) – This is an interesting article that goes through the various ways you can give yourself electricity, save heat by doing things like building a tiny greenhouse off the southern side of your house, and water filtration methods. Everything explained is based off of these interesting ReGen Eco Villages that are popping up all over the Netherlands. If nothing else, it's a great thing to go over in order to learn how to keep some power whenever your lights go out – at least enough power to save and close down everything you have open for work!

Evernote has been acquired – here's how its new owner can fix it! (https://thenextweb.com/news/evernote-acquired-how-new-owner-can-fix-it) – Evernote was sold on January 3rd to an Italian Company called Bending Spoons. Could be good, could be bad – who knows? I haven't updated my Evernote on my laptop in 4 years because I updated it regularly on my regular computer, and stopped about a year ago because I hated what they were doing. I so prefer my oldest version on my lap top – I still have my ‘sync' button. I miss that so much on the newer version….

The Lowdown:

I actually only found this because I noticed Freesoul's Elementor cleanup plugin – though I have to say that this plugin is pretty fantastic!

This is a premium plugin, although the free version absolutely gives you everything you need to do basic maintenance on your site.

Once installed and activated, you go to the plugins dashboard under ‘Freesoul Deactivate Plugins' on your left hand menu – here you can see every plugin you have activated, and where it is active. There is a guided tour you can take of the plugin which is very helpful in getting to know the basic menu items and what they do.

You can go through and deactivate each plugin on each separate page, post, or section of your site – and you are able to check out the effect of deactivating the plugins in each part you are testing out. You can see an information bar at the bottom of the preview page that tells you: number of plugins deactivated, number of database queries, initialization time of this page, page generation time, memory usage of this page. Thanks to just this little addition, you are able to see the difference you make on each separate area by deactivating plugins. I also like that unless you click ‘save changes', what you see is not what others will see – you are seeing the testing, not the permanent changes.

There are a lot of things you can do with this plugin in the free version; before testing this plugin out, I had no idea that there was even an option to change the firing order of plugins – that was a bit of learning curve! There is also an area where you can import/export a list of your favourite plugins, and an option where you can ask it to tell you to suggest unused plugins for pages/posts/etc – makes it a lot easier.

I found this plugin useful for debugging, speeding up, and forcing plugins to play nicely by separating them. Amazingly helpful!

Rarely done for a premium plugin, but this plugin is just so useful in the free version alone that I am giving it a:

Editor Cleanup for Elementor: clean up and solve plugin conflicts with the Elementor editor

The Lowdown:

The first thing to know about this, is that it needs the Freesoul Deactivate Plugins – Plugin manager and cleanup in order to work – though just the free version.

This plugin gives you the ability to disable plugins in the Outer Editor, Inner Editor, and the Editor Loading areas. A definition of each section is offered in the ‘details' section on the WordPress site.

This plugin seems to be fairly straightforward, though when I was going through it I realized I wasn't not entirely certain which plugins were actually utilized in Elementor – like Black Hole Bots; by deactivating this will I deactivate some of my security in general because that part of my site will no longer be secured by Back Hole Bots? To be safe, I simply left it on and moved onto other plugins I know aren't used – like Dinasaur Game.

Trying this out on my Sandbox I did notice a difference in the loading up of Elementor. Enough to make a difference on my Sandbox, likely will make enough of a difference to really notice on a much busier site with a lot of content.

This is a completely free plugin, and works very well.

The Lowdown:

This is an interesting plug and play type plugin; in order to choose ‘do not lazyload', you change the option in the ‘edit area' of the chosen widget in ‘Elementor Image Widget' options, and choose ‘do not lazyload'.

I like the fact that you have to choose to use this for your images individually rather than turning it on and it going wild and doing this for every single image on your site.

I wasn't really sure if it would actually do much, since as far as I understand using lazy load is supposed to compress and speed up your site. I personally did not really see much of a difference on my sandbox, although I would be interested to see how it works on a busier site full of content.

I would love to hear back from someone who has either tried this out, or will test it out on their busy site with a lot of content.

ClassicPress

ClassicPress is at a crossroads right now, we aren't sure whether or not they are going to stick around. It seems that either option they choose will have a lot of hard bumps ahead – I hope that they manage to keep ClassicPress going, that they become super strong and amazing like I know they can, and that they manage to keep that part of themselves that caused us to like them so much in the first place.

…A little about ClassicPress for those who aren't sure: ClassicPress is WordPress frozen at version 4.9. Once WordPress moved to 5, they added in a whole lot of new folders, and the experimental additions to the Core started in earnest. ClassicPress is literally the Classic version of WordPress. A few plugins have been made over the years for just ClassicPress, though all Plugins compatible with WordPress 4.9 should work for ClassicPress.

To any ClassicPress user listening right now: I challenge you – yes YOU – to write a review of your favourite, or least favourite ClassicPress plugin, and send it into us! You can do so by hitting us up at https://wppluginsatoz.com/submit-plugin-review/!

  • When using FTP, I noticed that often times you will get a ‘target file already exists' notification, even though you are uploading this file for the first time into an empty folder. I also noticed that more often than not, the source file is actually smaller than the target file – what is that about, and why does it happen?
    • Is choosing the option of ‘overwrite file' the right option if both are the same file, even though the source file is smaller?
  • Why are some WordPress Admin Logins so freaking slow…? And how is it that the Admin Login is freaking slow, but the rest of the site is not – and once you make it into the Admin Dashboard Area, nothing there moves slowly either – why?

I have a couple more questions for my dad just after the closing credits, for those listening elsewhere, you will have to make your way over to the YouTube's!

Questions asked after closing credits:

  • When making a full site backup in cpanel, you can choose the email that the backup completion notification is sent to. What reasons would there be for not receiving that notification for a site backup once the backup is complete?
  • When making a Sub-Domain through CPanel, it seems pretty straightforward for making it and transferring all the files over through PHPMyAdmin – at least for those who know what I am talking about. However, I am a little lost on separating the sub domain from the main domain – how do you do that? Why do you do that?
