Amber's Rant

This is #45 of 53 52 episodes for 2020. Its Episode 486 and things on this show are moving and shaking into a whole new Kritter. We have reached week 46 of the year 2020, and we are now 35 weeks into the Rona, and since there are still a few mom and pop shops that survived the FIRST lockdown, we need ‘obviously' to go into ANOTHER lockdown. Gotta get em all!

The world appears to have jumped out of the pot and into the frying pan, so now is the perfect time to make yourself a little place where you can TUNE OUT for a while! It can be anywhere and anything – a blanket thrown over your couch to build a fort, in your bed with your door closed and a ‘Do Not Disturb' sign or a sock on your door, or even your car! Get into a space all your own, throw on some music and grab a book, or even throw on a book and grab a drink! Kick back, and breathe. Try to get there at least once a week, more if you can.

If you have kids, let them know that they should only bother you if they are broken, dying, or bleeding for 1 WHOLE hour. Make your area comfy for you, and try to remove all internet AND radio with news hours while zoning out. Try to let go of everything outside of your control, and work on pestering those you know and care about to get their own Zone Out Space's started.

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

Let's get to the fun we have today.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is a fast growing fork of WordPress that is starting to come into its own. ClassicPress is focused on Business Websites, runs fast and is looking pretty good. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future.

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. Currently there are not a lot of ClassicPress specific plugins but I do know it is going to grow and I'll have to expand this segment then. Who knows, it could take over the whole show.

This week for ClassicPress I have:

News:

Azurecurve posted this in March or May (?) 2019 but it has a list of plugins he developed for ClassicPress

The Lowdown:

This is an interesting plugin I am just starting to experiment with for a pet project or you can use it for creating a database of predictions. It can be used for so many different things including collecting info about your users and more. It has some premium expansions for the plugin.

It was developed for tracking voter roles but has so many more applications and great little plugins if your collecting and managing data.

Description

This is a neat plugin I found while looking for something else.

Apparently, this started out as thing that the creators would put onto sites they worked on to help their clients and then they realized that it was actually quite useful for any other developers that may need to come onto the site and get some work done, so they made it into a plugin.

This plugin shows up on your dashboard under the heading ‘Recent Updates', and you can choose how many updates will show up on your new little widget. You can also choose whether or not the links show up in a new tab or just stays on the same tab.
Though the mustard yellow colour leaves something to be desired – oh wait! You can change that too!

It is simply designed with functionality in mind, and I think that they did a bang up job on it.

I've been using it for a bit now, and I find it pretty helpful honestly. I would absolutely recommend this freemium plugin to you if you like to stay in the know on what's been done recently on your site, and don't like having to search around for it.

The Lowdown:

This is a great replacement for the search function in your WooCommerce site. Using ajax, it returns great results along with images as the user is doing their search. You can place it via shortcode or widget anywhere in your website.

It does have a premium version that will give you better results, layouts, more custom searches, stock status and more.

Description

I came across the problem of PDF viewing in a project I am working on, and found this little diddy. It has 2 aspects to it – one is a PDF viewer, and the other is a PDFjs viewer.

The PDF viewer only works when you let it load, then press the refresh button and let it load again – sometimes not even then.
Though the PDFjs viewer works every time.

I'm not clear as to whether or not the people who took it over recently have any plans to fix this, though they themselves suggest that you use the PDFjs viewer over the PDF viewer.

It works well on the PDFjs, and it is what I needed and was able to find for the project I'm on, though I am searching for a better version of a PDF viewer that works well with Elementor.

This plugin is a ‘good for now' type plugin, and I am hoping that the new owners of it fix whatever issue they are having with the regular PDF part.

The Lowdown:

While working on a site I was in need of a better logging plugin and there are a few to choose from. I had been using one for a couple years but their recent update has made it almost unusable for me. They have moved much of what it used to do to the premium version and as I just want to track things for a short time, I want something to do a better job.

This one came close but it had issues with the setup, does not seem to work correctly so had to abandon it.

Description

This is a neat plugin; it gives you the ability to make your website capable of zooming on mobiles.

Now, I know that generally, a person CAN do this on most sites – but some sites get a bit odd when zoomed in on.
This plugin fixes that.

There's nothing to do with this plugin, just download and activate, and it does everything on its own.

Pretty nifty, total freebie; Generally I would give this a 5, but since it's a neat, though not overly useful plugin since most sites do this anyways, I'm lowering it a bit.

If you have found that your site is one of those that is a little odd when zoomed in on, go check this one out.

Questions and Answers –

How does a plugin work? Does it create it's own Universe attached to WordPress? Or does it fully mesh with the programming that's already there? How does it interact with the WordPress site itself?

What's going on with the site when a plugin stops it from working? Is the plugin stopping communication somehow?

When you mix 2 themes, one parent and one child, do they always work together, or are there issues where the themes don't work?

What's going on when they don't work? Why aren't they able to communicate and work in harmony?

Do front end and back end programming languages communicate the same way, or are they different? It seems to be the same, but they are separated. Why?

What is the difference between meta data and meta tags? Actually, what even are those two things? Or are they one in the same?

Have you ever used Github? I noticed that a lot of plugins are now supporting their plugins through this site, do you use it?

Is there a list somewhere where I can go and look up all the best sites to go to in order to learn about this world I am still so new to?
